pioneer day celebrations

I forgot to bring our camera to the Pioneer Day parade and festival, so all of these pictures were taken on our phone.

At the parade we had some great seats right in the shade, because that car that looks like it's about to hit Graham's head was parked there, and no one else wanted to sit behind it.

But it didn't matter because our kids stood out in front of the car, on the street, with all the other kids anyway.

This parade, more than any of the others, actually has floats, and some pretty impressive ones too.

This was our ward's float.

They chopped down a live tree to use for the tree in Lehi's dream, and fastened a big old metal rod into it.

It's hard to appreciate the entire float because my camera phone was slow and I couldn't take all the pictures I wanted. But it was a fun float and I know a lot of time went into it.

As with most parades, our kids loved picking up the candy that was thrown out.

These are the rodeo queens.

A cool float.

Another cool float.

After the parade, we headed to the fairgrounds for even more Pioneer Day fun. Drake and Graham had a good time on this makeshift swing.

The boys really enjoyed watching the motorcross races.

Graham was the only one who dared get his face painted, if you can even tell what it is.

Avery was very proud of her tissue doll that she got to make.

You can't really see anything in this picture, but this was the mutton busting event. If you're not familiar with mutton busting, it's a contest to see which kid (ages 4 and up) can ride and stay on a sheep the longest---kind of like bull riding for kids.

And of course we bought some sweet stuff while we were there, which Avery thoroughly enjoyed.

We also enjoyed the free watermelon that the missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cut up for everybody and anybody.

It was a good day.

I'm grateful for the pioneers and all they sacrificed for the gospel. And it's fun to have an excuse to celebrate every year.
