independence celebrations

This year we stretched our Independence Day celebrations through the entire weekend, because we could.

Friday night, we let our kids play with fire, so to speak.

We thought it would be a good bedtime activity.

Don't worry---Shad was helping Avery.

Saturday morning we got ourselves packed and left our house for the day. We stopped in a small town South of us so our kids could enjoy a 4th of July parade.

It wasn't terribly warm, but the kids had a good time anyway.

And we found out that the rumor Shad heard about this parade being known for giving out tons of candy was true.

Here's a video catching the kids excitement about the candy.

Keep in mind, this is a small town parade, so I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves.

After the parade we grabbed lunch and then continued South until we reached my relatives' home. They invited us to be a part of their 4th of July festivities and I thought it would be a good opportunity to hang out with relatives we don't see too much.

The kids and Shad got in the pool right away, before too many people showed up. Trent and Amy showed up not long after us.

I sat on the side and talked to Amy, cousins and uncles while Shad (and Trent) stuck close to the kiddos.

After swimming we ate tons of delicious food, which was followed by a "parade".

They went around the circle several times.

After the parade, most people gathered on the lawn while thoughts were shared.

Trent got some homemade ice cream for me and Avery.

The concluding event was, of course, the firework show.

My uncle invited all the kids to come up and take turns lighting some of the smaller fireworks, with their parents help.

Drake and Graham liked that idea.

Trent was great to help keep Avery happy.

I think this was the finale...

It was fun to hang out with relatives.

And fun to see Trent and Amy too.

Amy only has one month left until their firstborn son is expected to arrive.

The kids fell asleep pretty quick once we got them in their pajamas and car seats for the drive back home.

The next night we let the kids do some more sparklers and we set off the few fireworks that we had bought.

We had a good weekend, and I'm glad we were able to see family and have a safe trip.

I'm also very grateful for this wonderful country in which we live and for all the freedoms we enjoy. And I'm grateful for all those who give of their time and sacrifice so much to help maintain our freedom. Happy 4th of July!
