our gardens

We planted a garden again this year. We decided it would be fun to visit the local flea market to buy our tomatoes and a few other things.

It didn't disappoint.

We bought tomatoes, several herbs, some red cabbage plants and a couple flowers.

We also bought lunch.

And dessert.

We let the kids plant their own little garden this year.

They planted radishes, carrots, lettuce, sunflowers, watermelon, and pumpkins.

The lettuce and watermelon didn't make it.

But we got a bunch of radishes, carrots and pumpkins.

And two of the three sunflowers did great.

I have a separate post for one of the sunflowers because it did so great.

Here's a "during" shot of the carrots

and the pumpkins.

And this is at the end of the season. Pumpkins on the left, carrots in the middle, sunflower on the right.

We also planted a little herb/tomato garden.

Essentially, it went from this...

... to this.

Peppers.

Cabbage.

Red vs. black tomatoes.

And, of course, we planted our regular garden, which went from this...

...to this.

And again, from this...

...to this.

We did have several random plants pop up in other places that we didn't intentionally plant, such as squash by the swingset.

We also had a couple plants whose variety we didn't even plant, namely hubbbard squash and tall, skinny pumpkins (be careful what you throw out in the garden for compost).

Drake and Graham wanted to pose by this onion.

If you're already feeling overwhelmed just by reading about how much we planted (if you've made it this far in the post), rest assured we won't do as much next year, most likely.

Our kids were happy to help in the harvesting of it though.

(This is a pea/huckleberry mix).

And don't forget our "orchard".

We got apricots (although not near as many as last year),

mulberries,

and peaches. I'm still waiting for our cherry and apple trees to do anything.

Thanks for joining me on this overview of our planting madness.

Lesson learned: Squash grows well and where ever it wants to.
